Bearly 24 hours when the Senator representing Abia South senatorial district in the Senate, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe was arrested by the State Department of State Services, DSS, he has this evening been released from detention.
Senator Abaribe was arrested yesterday without disclosing reasons for his arrest. An arrest which was widely criticized by a cross-section of Nigerians. It was reported that his arrest was closely related to Nnamdi Kanu’s case and his opposition to the reduction of the Enugu airport budget.
According to his legal counsel, Mr. Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN), Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, was arrested for alleged gun running and aiding and supporting the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), his lawyer said yesterday.
Ume also revealed that the search warrant procured by the DSS to search Abaribe’s before the arrest on Friday allowed it to “focus and search for arms and ammunitions and any other incriminating document, while the alleged crime was aiding and supporting a proscribed body, The Indigenous People Of Biafra.
It was also gathered that the detailed search of all corners and every item’ in the house lasted from about 5pm till 11:15 pm Friday. 27 items were taken from his client’s home none of which was a gun or ammunition.
In the words of the SAN: “but unfortunately, two of the 27 items include the two handsets of two USA citizens found in the house.
“One of the laptops taken included that of an educationist containing examination questions slated to be set for students on the 25th of June 2018.
