It was jubilation galore in South Africa as hundreds of Pro-marijuana activists cheered in the public gallery and chanted “Weed are free now”, when the Constitutional Court gave its landmark ruling.
The Court, which is the highest in South Africa today, Tuesday says adults are now free to use cannabis in private places.
It is on the record that South Africa’s government had initially opposed its legalization, arguing the drug was “harmful” to people’s health. But in a unanimous ruling, judges also legalized the growing of marijuana for private consumption.
