The Federal Government through the State Aviation Minister, Senator Hadi Sirika, today, Wednesday announced the immediate suspension of the widely publicized national carrier, Nigeria Air without making known the reason behind the suspension.
Information from the presidency revealed that the step was as a result of the disapproval the move got from the Economic Management Team (EMT) which is being Chaired by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbanjo. According to the source, such a project should not be set up with public funds.
Senator Sirika who made the announcement immediately after the Federal Executive Council meeting said he regrets making the pronouncement, adding that the decision was a very tough one for the Federal Executive Council.
According to him, “I regret to announce that the Federal Executive Council has taken the tough decision to suspend the National Carrier Project in the interim. All commitments due will be honored. We thank the public for the support as always.”
He gave no explanation for the development, which has in the last few hours generated heated debate among Nigerians.
The source also revealed that the President has ruled out against spending money that is not in the budget, urging those in support of the new national carrier to work towards 2019 budget, that is, if any government investment is to be involved.
