Former Plateau State Governor and current Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial Zone, Joshua Dariye has this evening sentenced to 14 years in prisonment by the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in the Gudu Area of the nation’s capital of Abuja.
Dariye was found guilty of charges bothering on criminal breach of trust, dishonesty, and criminal diversion of funds meant for state use. Dariye was found guilty of 15 out of the 23 count criminal charge filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Before his sentencing, Dariye pleaded the court to temper justice with mercy, describing himself as a victim of circumstance as he was deceived by his bank.
While delivering her judgement, Justice Adebukola Banjoko said she was persuaded by the ex-governor’s claim of being a victim, decrying what she termed as “Brazen act of systematic looting”. She went on to state that Dariye was at a point richer than Plateau state.
Justice Banjoko held that evidence before the court confirmed huge outflow of funds from the Plateau State treasury, into private accounts mostly traced to the former governor.
As it is now, Joshua Dariye is to serve 14 years in prison, just like Jolly Nyame’s, the former Plateau governor is to serve without an option of fine.
